Waymo, the leading robot operator, said he would work with Toyota to design a new platform for autonomous cars and trucks and study ways to adjust automated driving technology for personal vehicles. The announcement comes in the heels of Alphabet CEO by saying that using the Waymo system for personal use was a future feature.
The world’s largest automaker shares a “strong sense of purpose and a common vision with Waymo in promoting security through automated driving technology,” said Hiroki Nakajima, toyota executive vice president Common Declaration with Waymo. “We are sure that this collaboration can help bring our solutions to more people around the world, moving us one step closer to a zero optimist society.”
Toyota has had an interior program that has been working for autonomous vehicles for years and expanding the use of advanced features-aids in both Toyota and Lexus product series, although it has not announced plans to launch its own robot service. Waymo also works with Hyundai Motor, who will start supplying it with electric Oniq 5 hatchbacks later this year to use the fast -growing fleet of robot.
Alphabet Sundar Pichai’s chief executive asked last week about the long -term development of Waymo during the quarterly call of the company’s results, he said that “the future choice around personal property” may be in cars, without processing. This was a repetition of a plan announced for the first time by former Waymo CEO John Kracik in 2018, though the company has said a few things about it since.
Waymo holds over 250,000 paid robotch rides a week in Phoenix, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Austin. He prepares to expand the service in Atlanta, Miami and Washington, DC, and tests the electric SUV Jaguar I-Pace in Nashville and Tokyo.
Working with Toyota directly on an autonomous vehicle platform, which both companies could share, could help reduce the cost of these vehicles, helping them make them more profitable. The Waymo system available for use in personal vehicles-which, unlike Tesla’s so-called Tesla feature, is truly autonomous and does not require human monitoring to take control-it would be likely to be available as a subscription service and a profitable new source of revenue for mountainous views, California.
Companies have said the scope of their cooperation “will continue to evolve through ongoing discussions”. They did not provide financial details about the partnership and a Waymo spokesman did not comment immediately.
