The Model YL “Long Wheelbase” Premium is the largest and most expensive version of Tesla’s best-selling vehicle. There is a lot to stack and compare.

All Tesla launch series carry a premium. In this case, the standout feature of course is the added 7 inches in length and a third row.

The Model YL seats six adults in three rows, with captain’s chairs in the second row — something no other Model Y offers. The added length means more room in the rear cabin, although how tolerable this third row is for adults on longer journeys remains to be seen.

Suspension: Suspension is different from any other investment. The base model Y uses passive dampers and the Premium has frequency-dependent passive dampers. The L features electronically continuously variable dampers that adjust in real time. For a three-row vehicle that regularly carries a full load, that’s a practical difference.

Additional: The technology load is the strongest in the composition. The L has 18 speakers, seven USB-C ports, an 8-inch rear touchscreen, FM radio and 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels — all standard. All six exterior colors are included at no extra charge, and a towbar comes standard. Tesla also bundles in 12 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and 12 months of Premium Connectivity. After that, FSD runs $99 per month and Premium Connectivity $9.99 per month.

Series: Range is estimated at 325 miles. The EPA has not yet issued a final assessment, so this number may move. But whatever the EPA number, 325 miles isn’t a great feature for the price, so keep that in mind.

Minivan competition? Model YL targets the three-row SUV and minivan segment, where buyers prioritize passenger capacity. But this segment is price sensitive and the ICE (internal combustion engine) competition is both fierce. Some (many?) buyers may choose to wait for the standard YL model — whenever it arrives. This should be more accessible and configurable. (So, is Tesla coming out with a traditional minivan like the Chrysler Pacifica or Honda Odyssey? AI doesn’t think so.)

And Tesla has more to say about the Model YL in the X:
