The weekend isn’t here yet, but I decided to try and post these guides a little early, Wednesday night instead of Friday. This is because a lot of stuff comes out on Wednesdays and Thursdays and it makes sense to post new content that comes out before the weekend before the weekend arrives. I will update each guide with anything I may have missed, so if you think of anything feel free to message me at Twitter the Facebook.
If this works and people enjoy having access to the guide before the weekend, I’ll keep posting early. If not, I’ll be back to posting on Fridays from now on. We’ll test the waters and go from there.
There are actually quite a few new shows and movies to stream this week, so let’s dive right in!
Check out last week’s streaming guide here:
What’s new
We’ll start with the new stuff and then look at some of the shows that are currently on. I don’t always understand everything, so if you know of something new and exciting (or think it should be on this list) drop me a line at Twitter and Facebook.
Fallout (April 10 on Prime Video)
I’ll watch it tonight, though I doubt I’ll finish all 8 episodes in one sitting. However, I am very excited for this adaptation of the popular post-apocalyptic video game franchise from Bethesda. I love the casting and my colleague Paul Tassi, who has seen all 8 episodes, says it is very good. I’ll think about it soon. All 8 episodes air on Prime Wednesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. PT.
Baby Reindeer (April 11 on Netflix)
This new limited series is based on true events and looks pretty wild. He is one of the creators of dark comedy The End Of The F***cking World and comedian Richard Gadd, so if you liked that, you’ll probably enjoy this too. It looks very funny, very creepy and very tense. However, there are no baby reindeer.
Blood Free (April 10 on Disney+ and Hulu)
A Korean thriller about a future where animals are no longer slaughtered for meat and some kind of conspiracy surrounding the company that grows fake meat in a lab. I just stumbled upon it so I know very little about it, but it’s out now and honestly it looks pretty exciting. New episodes come out on Wednesdays.
Strange Way Of Life (April 12 on Netflix)
Pedro Almodóvar’s short film stars Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and is somewhat more action-packed Brokeback Mountain. It’s only half an hour. Pascal and Hawke’s characters reunite and rekindle an old flame, but then things go horribly wrong. It looks really weird and I’ll definitely have to check it out.
CTRL+ALT+DESIRE (April 16 at Parmount+)
If you’re a true crime buff, this might be the three-part documentary for you. The three-part series is about Grant Amato, a young man from Florida (heh) who becomes obsessed with a Bulgarian cam model, leading him to create a new persona online by stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from family members. Murder ensues. The documentary explores the story, examines the evidence, and paints a complex portrait of the messy, blurred lines between fantasy and reality.
What’s up
Notably absent from this week’s guide Status, the Kate Winslet-led dark satire that ran for the past six weeks on HBO and Max, which I still haven’t watched. Here are some of the other ongoing shows worth checking out that continue to air weekly.
Sugar (Apple TV)
The last time I saw Colin Farrell as a detective was in his 2nd season True detective. He was spectacular in it. He also played a detective in minority report, chasing Tom Cruise. Now it takes center stage on Apple TV Sugar, where he plays a private detective named John Sugar who is hired to track down the missing grandchild of a Hollywood producer. Episodes air every Friday on Apple TV+. I’ve liked the ones I’ve watched so far, but I’m totally undecided Sugar still. More thoughts follow.
Mary and George (Starz)
This wasn’t on my radar at all, but it sounds like the kind of period drama I could get into. Mary & George is the true story of Mary Villiers (Julianna Moore) who climbs the social ladder thanks to her son, George (Nicholas Galitzine) who accidentally sleeps with King James IV (Tony Curran). Seems like there’s going to have to be a lot of political intrigue and backstabbing to make this one fun. New episodes air every Friday on Starz.
Shogun (Hulu)
You can read my last recap/review Shogun here.
The best right now is Shogun on Hulu, though I’m having a hard time remembering that it airs so early in the week and I keep forgetting to watch it on time. Only two episodes left. New episodes are released every Tuesday and we only have two left! The series is based on the novel by James Clavell and is truly outstanding in every way, from the costumes and sets to the stunning cinematography, music and a number of brilliant performances. If you are interested in feudal Japan or enjoy Game of Thrones style intrigue, give it a shot.
Other shows currently airing include:
- Star Trek: Discovery’s The fifth season airs every Thursday on Paramount+. This actually reminds me that I never watched season 4. I have mixed feelings about the show. He’s had some great moments in his first three seasons, but a lot of things annoy me. I’m back on all things Star Trek, the truth must be told.
- Parish on AMC with Giancarlo Esposito. I tried the first episode and got a little bored and decided to watch something else. I haven’t been back to this show yet and I’m not sure I will. But Esposito is great The gentlemen on Netflix which I absolutely love. What a fun show!
- A gentleman in Moscow at Paramount+ starring Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, about a Russian aristocrat under house arrest after the Soviet Revolution. That’s good. I have to write something about this. New episodes come out on Sundays.
- X-Men 97 on Disney+ brings back the classic, vintage feel of the old X-Men series. It continues to air on Wednesdays and is really a lot of fun.
In theaters
Civil War
I try to post at least one theatrical release a week, even though this is a streaming guide. I just love going to the movies and am an advocate for the survival of the theater business, especially when COVID nearly killed the industry. I don’t want to miss the movie theaters.
This week’s pick is Civil War, a film about a second American Civil War that takes place in modern times. It has mixed reviews, although a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t bad. I hope to go see it this weekend and report back here on this blog.
And that’s all for now guys. Be sure to let me know if you have any suggestions for me too!
