An update for Windows 11 users that fixed a number of issues, including system freezes when using the Edge web browser, found itself introducing a few of its own. Microsoft has warned all users that the September 2024 update KB5043145 (OS Versions 22621.4249 and 22631.4249) may cause devices to reboot over and over and over again. Yes, the dreaded blue screen of death is back once again for Windows users still reeling from the CrowdStrike update fiasco back in July. This time, however, some users have seen a green screen freeze. Here’s what you need to know.
Microsoft’s warning to all Windows 11 users
Microsoft’s latest update to its Windows 11 operating system was released just a few days ago, on September 26, but that was enough time for many people to worry about the consequences of installing it. While KB5043145 was intended to bring new features, such as the ability to share local files directly from search results displayed in the taskbar and adding a logout command to the Start menu, as well as fixing issues with the Edge browser and Task Manager freezing, it’s not just what was introduced.
Microsoft has now confirmed that the update may leave customers with a Windows 11 system that “reboots multiple times or becomes unresponsive with blue or green screens“, after installation. But that’s not all, some users have also reported that the Automatic Repair tool opens after multiple reboots. On the security side, Microsoft has also confirmed that BitLocker recovery can be triggered by this annoying, to say the least, system update issue.
Unfortunately, for now, at least, there doesn’t seem to be any mitigation. Microsoft simply said: “We are currently investigating this issue. We will update when more information is available.”
If you haven’t uninstalled the Windows 11 update yet, my recommendation would be to hold off until Microsoft figures out what’s going on and fixes it.
