God of War Laufey is coming. We know that for sure, but when? That’s what we don’t know.
God of War is my favorite single player action adventure series. There has never been a bad version and the last one, God of War: Ragnarok was so amazing, I experienced everything from terror, thrills, curiosity, frustration and tears as I hacked and slashed through the world that Sony Santa Monica beautifully crafted.
With Laufey revealed during Tuesday’s Sony State of Play, buzz is at an all-time high even without a firm release date.
When is God Of War Laufey coming out?
As detailed during the 20-minute reveal, God of War Laufey is simply “coming to PS5.” That’s all. It’s terrible, but the extended gameplay video gives hope that the release will be sooner rather than later. However, with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 looming in November, it looks like that could be pushed back to 2027.
The PS5 is the only platform Sony has confirmed. There’s been no mention of PC, no mention of PS4 backwards support, and no release window — just that the game is now available on the PlayStation Store wishlist.
This cuts both ways. Twenty minutes of polished gameplay usually indicates a release within 12 months, but Sony tends to wait until it finds a date worth hype before locking it down publicly.
What is the story of God Of War Laufey?
Faye is the new protagonist and Laufey starts at Everywhen. It is unclear if the entire story takes place there. However, it looks like it will have heavy duty opponents and the world could be visually stunning. I wonder if there will be problems with people of certain religions taking offense to the depiction of their deities.
Cory Barlog confirmed in an interview after the reveal that it is not a prequel. The game picks up right after Faye’s funeral at the start of 2018’s God of War, with Faye waking up in the Everywhen — described as the afterlife of the gods, where deities from many mythologies battle for power.
The driving conflict is that the plans Faye made to protect Kratos and Atreus are now in jeopardy. He must fight through Everywhen to save what he built, which gives Santa Monica room to finally show players the mastermind behind the entire Norse saga.
How does Laufey’s Combat differ from Kratos?
While Kratos’ fighting style relied more on brutality and explosiveness, Faye’s style seems to be more capriciously brutal, with speed and magic playing a major role.
Game director Ariel Lawrence and Barlog have framed it as a deliberate contrast. Kratos was the stoic brick wall. Fai is built around speed, fluidity and high mobility, with double jumps, juggling combinations and aerial strings more reminiscent of Greek-era games than modern Scandinavian duology.
Her main weapon is a legendary sword. The title mechanic is soul-based: in Everywhen, Faye can separate an enemy’s soul from their body, then attack the soul directly, slam it into other enemies, or weaponize it for combos. This is the system that reveal gameplay spent the most time showing off, and it’s clearly the design hook.
Who are the new God Of War Laufey characters?
We’ve learned that Faye will be played by Deborah Ann Woll, the same actress used for the character during the Ragnarok flashbacks.
Jack Quaid voices Phranque. You might know him as the star of The Boys. Perlina Lau voices Rue, a new character in the series. Lau has mostly had smaller roles, but most recently, you may have seen her in Creamerie. Sekhmet, an Egyptian lioness goddess and Begtse, a Mongolian warrior deity, as well as a six-legged cat that can fly are all enemies that Faye will encounter.
Phranque was the beginning of the apocalypse for many viewers – a talking gelatinous entity that participates in battles and provides commentary. Rue guards Faye’s sword and looks set to fill the role of narrative anchor and Mimir-esque companion. Polymythology bosses confirm that Everywhen isn’t just Norse, which opens the door to a much wider canvas going forward.
