Will Towside and Ast Spacemobile CEO ABEL AVELAN, March 2025

Will Townsend

Traveling to Barcelona at the end of the winter season to watch the Mobile World Congress has become an annual ritual for me in the last decade. In previous years, I have tried my best to census the huge number of updates, dinner talks and announcement – but it’s too much. This year, I am talking about a different approach and in particular I offer some balance in the AI advertising campaign and its impact on the infrastructure of the radio network. Yes, AI helps carriers and equipment suppliers to redefine customer support and overall network functions, but I have written about it extensively, and there are many others that are happening in the industry.

In this piece, I will point out three notable announcements, three companies that will watch and three video records that I have hosted at the event through five five media. Let’s dive!

Three notable announcements in MWC

Many established players in networking, telecommunications and related areas use MWC as a showcase for their biggest announcements and this year’s event was no different.

HPE ARUBA Networking introduces a new Telco-Grade switch

HPE ARABA Networking continues to improve the Cellular Networking private platform, with the new CX 8325P switch as the last part of this puzzle. The modern AI workloads that include both genetic and practical AI applications have an important opportunity for operators for operators and communication providers, especially as they move to the edges of the network. The CX 8325P is designed to handle these requirements. The company says it is the first solution to incorporate the precision timetable into the network fabric that facilitates the accuracy of nanoseconds for improved quality of calls, data transactions and delay intensity workload. It is also noteworthy that HPE uses a single operating system designed to facilitate not only growth but also constant management.

In Barcelona, I got to talk to HPE executives, including my good friend Phil Mottram, who drives HPE ARABA networking and the company’s Athonet Core infrastructure leadership. From these conversations, it is clear that the HPE is busy bringing the operation of the Wi-Fi management plane and cell solutions together in a single control panel. Once this effort is completed later this year, it could significantly accelerate HPE’s private networking offering by eliminating the complexity of network coatings.

AMD, Cisco, Nokia and Reliance Jio join forces for Open Telecom AI platform

I was one of the few members of the media and the analysts of the industry, given the opportunity to attend this announcement personally and I was impressed. In general, the initiative is the spiritual child of Mathew Oommen, chief executive of Jio Platforms Limited. Oommen’s vision is to democratize access to modern AI applications in places that are macroeconomically disputed, including the homeland of India. It is a bold and ambitious effort, especially given the expense of the GPU expensive used to train large language models hosted by clouds. However, Jio has demonstrated the ability to rest on disorder, virtualization and open platforms to build mobile networks with speed and scale. I have no doubt that the holding body can perform its mission, as this impressive set of partners and Reliance Jio’s success in building a subscriber base of almost half a million customers.

Ast Spacemobile and Vodafone Group Launch Joint Venture

Named “Satco” (at least for now), this partnership aims to facilitate the ubiquitous coverage of geographical cellular mobility in Europe. I like this formation of a single entity to effectively serve the highly fragmented landscape of mobile telephony providers within individual countries across the European Union. The new business aims to provide a hand -in -hand solution supported by a fully managed networking stack and functions that face the need for digital domination.

I spent the time with the CEO of AST Spacemobile ABEL Avellan at the end of the event and discussed several possible cases of use for Satco’s services beyond the obvious ability to use low -track satellite connection to remotely cover the land network. Three examples of this potential are dramatically improved connectivity services on commercial aircraft, large -scale support for agricultural technological developments to improve crop yields and, ultimately, wide autonomous driving. This AST Spacomobile technological stack expands how it reaches well beyond the simple SOS text messages, such as the business directly to the cell service offered by Starlink’s opponent today.

Three companies for monitoring

Due to all MWC attention it attracts every year, it is also a natural space for companies that are not (yet) household names to make their mark. Here are three that stood out for me.

To get luxurious with flolive

London -based Flolive claims to operate the largest “Hyperlocal” and Global Data Network on the planet. Hyperlocal refers to the company’s ability to provide connectivity quickly and effectively anywhere in the world. The company offers a full range of connectivity solutions, including a Io-to-end IoT connectivity platform, a 4G LTE and 5G 5G offer, a global network-as service solution and business support systems aimed at providing flexibility to operators to start new business and new business. I spent time with Flolive executives on MWC and left impressed with the company’s potential – thanks to both the development of industrial IoT in the case of construction automation and the development of private networking in general.

Is this Inseego 3.0 we see?

One could argue that MWC made the reissue of Inseego 3.0. The company’s identity is always linked to cellular hotspots Wi-Fi to Mifi products, providing an incredibly powerful mooring point and brand recognition to promote firm wireless access and Edge mobile solutions. However, Inseego has stumbled up in recent years due to a focus on telematics that have proven to be distracted. This has now changed with the sale of these assets and the recent announcement of Juho Sarvikas as the new CEO. Sarvikas brings a rich experience and success to Inseego, having served as president of Qualcomm’s North American business unit.

After his visit with Sarvikas and his leadership team at the event, I was impressed with his realistic vision to rejuvenate Inseego’s opportunities to take advantage of 5G power, including a recent announcement of the newly acquired Dragonwing FWA Gen 4. Cellular Router.

Spectrum spectrum helps operators to make the most of the licensed spectrum

The Spectrum Effect offers an innovative platform that provides granules of RAN interference detecting network detection and offers AI-Ran-powered perforation capabilities. By utilizing AI and automation, the company helps service providers maximize the use of one of their most valuable assets – the licensed spectrum. From my point of view, spectrum spectrum can be one of the best preserved secrets of the telecommunications industry, but that will change soon. Telco industry veteran, Shaun McCarthy, joined about a year ago as president and head of revenue, having served in previous superior leadership roles in Nokia and Cisco.

I know McCarthy on a personal basis and I believe that his historical focus on customers’ experience and understanding the pens of the operator (especially around the management of subscribers and operating expenses) have the opportunity to determine the company for further success.

Three video recordings

During the many days I was in Spain, I had the opportunity to sit on the camera with technical and business leaders from different technology providers to discuss the new contributions that their companies bring them to the market. Here are three of my favorite conversations.

Palo Alto Networks launches the Prisma Sase 5G solution

What I like about Palo Alto’s new SASE 5G offer is his ability to complete 5G encryption improvements over 4G LTE, while providing another avenue for the service provider to balance costs in cellular infrastructure and licensed spectrum. This six five -media video goes deeper into the details of the Palo Alto Networks solution.

Intel continues to make telecommunications contributions

I was happy to dive deeper into what Intel is doing in terms of network functions, the acceleration of AI and the activation of the limbs. My guests and I also discussed the efforts of the Intel ecosystem with partners such as Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung. Companies work together to drive new levels of innovation and unlock value for customers based on open standards. This Video highlights the Xeon 6 Telecommunications Work Consignment capabilities.

Ericsson drives the network planning charge

Ericsson continues to focus on network planning, as well as help operators move to 5G autonomous to unlock 5G’s real potential. This means that it allows the network to be cut, the AI optimized RAN, the Enterprise FWA, the private networking and much more. Ericsson did a lot to prove its leadership in many areas in MWC and This video goes deeper into the company’s efforts.

MWC expands its focus and approach

Participation in the MWC Barcelona 2025 was high and the public’s demographics are shifted, with an emphasis on business connectivity services. This is not an amazing development, especially given the increasing adoption of private Cell Network and AI usage that are able to exploit both wired and mobile networks. My prediction is that the next 5G killer application beyond FWA could allow AI genetic and practical applications on the edge of the network. Time will show whether my prediction is valid, but one thing is certain: connectivity is still decisive for facilitating both digital transformation of telecommunications and business.
