On April 25, 2025, the United Nations Security Council held a meeting on the situation in Syria They are undergoing a rocky transition after years of conflict and authoritarian rule. Four and half months after the fall of the Assad regime, the temporary authorities began to take official steps to political reform. However, ongoing violence, the deepening of economic difficulties and the deterioration of the humanitarian crisis, international support is required.

During the United Nations Security Council meeting, Asaad Hasan Al-Shabani, a temporary Syrian Foreign Minister, underlined the basic progress in recent months, including maintaining state institutions, the formation of transitional government, the dissolution of armed factions and the launch of a national fascist. He further added: “The Syrians are ready to reshape the future of their country and set a new example of what a successful transition after conflicts looks like anywhere in the world. Serving from entering our country, while allowing illegal networks to thrive.”

The UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen stressed that: “The challenges are enormous and the situation is extremely fragile, there is a need for much more political integration-and for much more economic action. In his information, Mr Pedersen further emphasized that the new Syrian leadership should be expanded to March violence against mainly Alaic communities in the fort.

The humanitarian situation in Syria is terrible, with over 70% of the population that needs help and over half a person’s face of food. Despite improvements in locations, funding deficiencies threaten life -saving businesses. Joyce Msuya, Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, stressed that the organization “Need[s]

More funding to maintain this project, let alone the scaled further. “As has been received less than 10% of the funds required for relief efforts for the first half of 2025.

During the meeting, Russia and China raised the issue of justice and accountability. Russia has said it supports efforts to promote national cohesion and continuing commitment with all communities, including ethnic-religious minorities. The ambassador degraded Nebenzia noted the expansion of the Independent Research Committee examining the killings, expressing hope for a complete, transparent, independent and impartial research that keeps the perpetrators. This is a shift from previous approaches. Indeed, Russia was one of the two countries (along with China) that previously prevented the UN Security Council resolution aimed at referring the situation to Syria to the International Criminal Court. During the Assad regime, Russia also prevented many other resolutions that were to provide more complete answers to the atrocities and helping communities. Similarly, China’s ambassador Fu Cong emphasized the importance of justice and accountability and emphasized Syria’s responsibility to combat terrorism effectively and without double standards.

The international community must support Syria to ensure that the transition provides the change demanded by people in Syria. After years of violence and conflict, people need constant peace and security to be able to rebuild their lives and secure their future. Justice and accountability are an important part of this effort.
