Jaqueline Amorim scored a first-round submission victory over Vanessa Demopoulos during the UFC Vegas 97 qualifiers at the Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday.
However, it will be interesting to see if the former’s victory stands.
Immediately after Dimopoulos was forced to tap out from Amorim’s arms, the former complained to the referee. Dimopoulos accused Amorim of grabbing her glove to maintain an advantage on the ground – which is illegal.
As it turned out, Dimopoulos was right. Check out the finish here:
X expert and personality Josie Aldo took a screenshot that captures Amorim’s illegal tactic of preventing Dimopoulos from escaping the guard.
Others on social media seemed to agree with Aldo, and some discussed the possibility of the fight being ruled a no-contest.
Amorim was officially declared the winner and the result was not changed even after the referee watched the replay. The result was not changed after an impromptu meeting between the panel, Herb Dean, and Jacob Montalvo, captured by MMA Mania’s Alex Behunin.
After the fight, Amorim denied grabbing her opponent’s glove. “I’m just taking a look at the big screen,” Amorim told the media after the match. “From the angle I looked, it didn’t look like I was holding. I was holding over the gloves, like together, not in. But maybe I’ll look later. My corner said they looked, but they weren’t. They heard the committee was looking, and they said it was ok, and there was nothing for me, I have a clear conscience.
Amorim’s win improved her record to 9-1 and was her third in a row. Her UFC record is now 3-1 and she has earned a win in every fight. There are times when a controversial ending leads to an immediate rematch, but I doubt the UFC would do that for a preliminary bout on an Apex card.
Even if the result of the match changes to a no-contest, Amorim will likely move up and up, while Demopoulous will remain in the same spot or perhaps fall.
He is 5-2 in the UFC. Here’s a look at all the results from UFC Vegas 97.
