It’s the first Thor’s Day of 2024, dear Wordlers. Probably right, it’s also the first snow day. I know Thor is not the god of snow, but he is a god often associated with storms.
In any case, it was yesterday Wordle Wednesday and I shared a somewhat complicated trailer. Today, I will give you the answer. Here was the puzzle:
A farmer sends his daughter in a small boat along the river to the market with a bag of coins. With her pouch of coins she buys a dog, a chicken and a bag of corn. When she brings her purchases back to her small boat, she realizes that it is so small that she will only be able to carry one of her three purchases at a time. But he is faced with a dilemma: If he leaves the chicken with the corn, the chicken will eat the corn. If he leaves the scabby dog with the chicken, the scabby dog will eat the chicken. How does he manage all three species without any of them becoming a meal?
The answer is simpler than it seems. The farmer’s daughter has to make many trips and carry cargo in more than one direction. He must first get the chicken – the only one of the three that can eat or be eaten – to the other side of the river. Then he goes back for the dog. When he brings the dog to the far bank, he must load the chicken back into the boat and return it to the original bank. She leaves the chicken there, taking the bag of corn with her. After depositing the corn in the dog, he makes another trip to collect the chicken again. What a hassle!

Bot Wordle Analysis

Well, I just buckled down and used the Wordle Bot’s favorite word today, and it was a pretty good choice even if my second and third guesses blew me away. Shale reduced the 2,309 possible solutions to just 15, and stash reduced to just 2. A coin toss. Alas, I chose smart instead insufficient and left with Wordle at 4.

Today’s Wordle etymology
The word “scant” comes from the Old Norse word “skamt”, meaning “short, short, scanty”. This Old Norse word is related to Old English ‘scamian’, meaning ‘to be ashamed, to blush, to feel guilty’. Over time, the meaning evolved from a sense of lack or inadequacy, likely influenced by the sense of not measuring up to a standard or expectation, which is associated with the sense of shame or inadequacy.
In Middle English, “scant” came to be used in the sense of “barely adequate”, and this usage has continued into Modern English. The word encapsulates the idea that something is enough or slightly less than enough, often used to describe limited quantities or limited rights.
