Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word datum comes directly from the Latin Datum, which means “something given” (is the neutral of Datus, the previous involvement of Dare, “to give”). In medieval and neo-Latin, the Datum was used in academic writings to refer to information or a condition. English borrowed it in the 17th to the 18th century in the sense of “an information element”, later established in scientific and technical contexts as unique data.
