How to play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands Puzzle is a classic word search game. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.
There is a new game of his Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight letter grid. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common and you’ll get an idea of what that topic is. When you find a topic word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects two opposite sides of the board. While thematic words would not be a proper name, spangram might be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Each letter is used once in one of the theme words and the spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it is possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double-tap the last letter to submit your guess.
If you find three valid words with at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you will unlock the Hint button. Clicking on this will highlight the letters that make up one of the topic words.
Be warned: You should be alert.
“Some topics are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They can also be steps in a process, elements that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homonyms. The New York Times notes. “Just like that varies its difficulty Wordle puzzle in a week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy] Bennett plans to pitch Strands solve curveballs every now and then.”

Complete Strands grid for March 9, with the words BREAD, PROMISE, BREAKABLE, RECORD, SILENCE, … [+]
I think I’m starting to find my groove Strands, as I often need a hint to get things started. To unlock one, I found the BELOVED in the middle, the SAIL in the lower left, and the BOAT in the lower right. This unlocked the letters for MOLD, which didn’t really help me understand the subject. At least SWEAT was next to it.
I then spotted the BREAD in the upper left. We’re still no closer to finding out. I needed another hint at that point. HAIR and LAIR in the bottom left then PRIME in the top center unlocked a second one. This gave me the letters for HEART.
The spangram and theme were still bothering me, so maybe one more hint would do it. CURB in the bottom center, ROLE in the bottom right and SMILE above gave me another clue. This time, he gave me a RECORD in the upper right. This also closed the right rail and helped me finally figure out the spangram: BREAKABLE. That left me with PROMISE and SILENCE to get things done.
In total, I used three tips. Spangram was the sixth theme word I found.
I don’t necessarily mind not having a perfect game, but I’d like to limit the maximum number of hints to one for the future. I enjoyed today Strands although. It was definitely the hardest so far. And remember, only shooting stars break the mold.
