Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 is one of the most anticipated handsets of 2024. It will debut with a new display, powerful AI features, and a thinner, lighter design. And now we know more about Samsung’s plans to support the foldable.
In a move that will reassure consumers when the Galaxy Z Fold 6 goes on sale later this year, Samsung will offer over seven years of Android software support and updates, along with seven years of security updates and patches. These will keep the foldable device as secure as possible and preserve Android’s additions to support large-screen smartphones such as the Z Fold series.
On the one hand, this should come as no surprise. Google announced a seven-year support window when it launched the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro devices (the first to have Android 14 out of the box). Samsung immediately followed with the traditional flagship of the Galaxy S24 family, offering all the same seven years of software support and security updates.
However, not every new device gets the seven-year update. While this is understandable Cheaper headphones might only get three or four years, a look around some of the new flagship smartphones announced at Mobile World Congress shows that even some of the older handsets haven’t made it to seven years. An example would be Honor’s flagship Magic6 Pro, which only offers four years of software and security updates.
The news that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be part of the seven-year crowd will be welcomed by the community. Collapsibles represent the cutting edge of mobile construction. they also represent a significant investment by consumers looking for a powerful smartphone that will last for many years.
By offering seven years of software support, Samsung signals its plans for the Z Fold 6 to be close to the 2030s.
