If you were to attend the school on Mindanao island – the second largest island in the Philippines – you may notice that some of the boys have races in their pockets. Inside the match boxes, you won’t find races, however. You will find “Derby spiders” – which is a general name used to describe various species of spiders used in the “spider wrestling” animal blood cell.

The Spider wrestling, as is traditionally the case in the Philippines, includes the placement of two female spiders on the opposite edges of a narrow stick (one that looks like a long timber). The spiders fight each other, meeting in the middle of the stick and engaged in battle until a spider victorious – either hitting the spider from the stick, injuring the spider or wrapping it in a silk cocoon.

The most common type of spider used in Mindanaoan spider struggle, according to one research paperis Neoscona vigilanswhose common name is the spider with brown legs or tiger.

Neoscona vigilans It is a spider that was in a bullet inhabited in areas such as agricultural fields, gardens and wooded environments. The species is nightly, hunting its prey during twilight and usually consumes in the morning. Sphere spiders are known to create complex and highly organized tissues to hunt the prey. The structure of its tissue varies throughout the year, with changes in its angle, above the ground, line density and magnetic orientation, affected by seasonal displacements. Despite these variations, the spider retains the basic symmetrical standard of tissue.

However, school children who capture these spiders do not deal with the spider skills, however. On the contrary, they are looking for woven sphere that look more aggressive.

How do they find the spiders who will win in battle? A rule has to do with where the spider is when it is captured. According to the dominant wisdom, spiders arrested in or near electrical lines are particularly aggressive. But it’s hard to find these spiders. Most spiders are captured in trees and meadows.

Then there is the issue of training a spider, once arrested, to succeed in battle. To this end, spider owners have developed all types of rituals. Some are trying to rage their spider on milk and honey before the battle. Others use dextrose, plum fruits, coconut milk and even duck egg soup. Still others prefer to deliberately starve their spider before a race in the hope that it will make the spider more aggressive.

In addition, Spider players agree that drawing a spider before battles is a necessary step to give the spider the best chances of victory. Here is how researchers have described this process:

“They need an exercise in the form of a battle with another spider. During training, the spider will be placed on a stick with a dead spider at the other end. The spider will eat the dead spider, however, before eating the dead spider, he would have to be taken from the stick. Walking on the stick and will catch the Dead Spider.

Finally, the race begins. Groups of people flock around the spider and place bets on which spider they think they will win the race. The battles can take just 30 seconds with aggressive spiders and for five minutes if the spiders are more plum. Once a winner is declared, the spiders are controlled and treated for any injuries they may have suffered during the race. Sometimes the wounded spiders are released back to their natural habitat to be corrected and then collected by the owner a few days later.
