A terrifying, but strangely bloodless, episode

We’re down to the final episodes of MGM’s hit horror series, Fromand things get pretty intense. Sunday afternoon’s episode had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Spoiler ahead.

Many things happen in Fromville as our heroes try to find a way to escape:

  • Boyd and the other main characters try to find a way to enter the tunnels and save the dead children buried there. Boyd’s latest plan is to test one of the spears from the lake settlement and see if it can kill the townspeople’s monsters. Jade draws a map with wires to depict the tunnels.
  • Colony House is a hive of activity. Donna is still bedridden after the near-fatal heart attack. Fatima is still building her golem. A team led by Acosta (not bad from her little ambulance) goes through the table’s basement and warehouse to find evidence of the Man in Yellow and Jades and Tabitha’s previous incarnation.
  • Tabitha, meanwhile, helps Victor try to find information on the Man in Yellow, which I’ll come back to in a moment.
  • The Man in Yellow is currently not a man or in yellow, but rather the super creepy girl, Sophia. She’s so creepy, evil, and evil that I’m not sure how no one has suspected her of anything yet. That barrier should be broken soon, I imagine. More on Sophia and a very interesting tidbit below.
  • Finally, we have Henry. Henry started going downhill when he found out about the man in yellow killing and eating his wife. Sophia then put a drop of her blood in his drink and his alcoholism combined with this black magic makes him see things. Specifically, he has visions of being on life support, including one that caused him to briefly wake up in the “real world” and see Victor there.

What happens to Henry is basically what happened to Boyd’s wife. He thought it was all a dream and if the people in the dream died, they would wake up. Henry follows the exact same path, only he starts to wonder if he really is in a coma and none of it is real. Seeing Victor has an incredibly diabolical twist: That would mean his family didn’t actually disappear. They’ve just been in a coma all this time and they’re alive and well.

I feel bad for Henry, but not that bad. It’s really getting on my nerves. He’s supposed to be there for Victor. She’s promised him time and time again that she’ll take care of him now, that she’ll be the father Victor never had, and some disturbing news sends him over the edge. Henry, my guy, Victor had to see this and then live alone and terrified for years and years. You can’t be so self-pitying. I used to like Henry, now I think I dislike him more than Acosta. Mostly, I feel bad for Victor.

I’ll throw some shade at Tabitha too. When she accompanies him to go look through the Man in Yellow’s car (or, rather, the car he appeared in) they bring Ethan along. Victor finds a creepy bag full of human teeth. He tries to show Ethan to “prepare” him and points out something very important. The last time Tabitha was there, as Miranda, she came with a boy and a girl and only the boy survived. And he had to grow up alone and terrified. He wasn’t prepared. However, Tabitha doesn’t want Ethan to see the teeth, and when Ethan runs to avoid the whole thing, Tabitha snaps at Victor “What’s wrong with you?”

Are you serious Tabitha? What’s wrong with Victor? What’s wrong with you, lady? She’s strangely cold to him even before that, despite the rather huge revelation that she was his mother in a previous life. You would think maybe they would talk.

At least everyone else is talking. Boyd is very open about everything with the gathered Fromvillians after they discover the door to the basement (which is sealed). So much communication this season! No wonder the Man in Yellow had to show up to make things worse. At this rate, with everyone working together, they might escape.

The most interesting thing about this episode was Sophia’s spellcasting. He finds an egg and cracks it over Roger’s rather gruesome corpse and whispers some sort of spell in a strange language. Later, she resurrects him using more magic. This is the first time we’ve seen magic actively used in this show, and it reinforces my theory that the Man in Yellow is some kind of evil fairy who traps people in his dark realm to feed on their fear and suffering (and their instruments).

The teeth also reinforce this theory. I mean, the tooth fairy, right? Just a very twisted version of the tooth fairy.

The episode culminates with Boyd’s plan going terribly wrong. Kenny is the one to execute it and he stabs one of the monsters who pretends to die and then laughs at Kenny. He is quickly surrounded and monsters block all nearby doors. Of course, Kenny also deserves a dressing down at this point: Boyd told him to stab and run, don’t even bother to see if it works, but he just stands there. He just stands there like an idiot! If he had been killed this episode, he only had himself to blame.

He gets to the bus, but Smiley gets there before he can close the door and Smiley almost kills him, but then something happens. Fatima, who can see all this happening through Smiley’s eyes, screams at him to stop. Somehow, her psychic relationship with Smiley has a silver lining. Smiley’s transformation into a full monster stops and Kenny is able to escape. It seems the Man in Yellow’s machinations didn’t quite work out as planned.

The resurrected Roger, with button eyes and a torn mouth and jaw, bursts into the Colony House but Elgin stabs him with one of the lake’s spears and dies. Kind of, ah, toothless move from Sofia, if you ask me. Kenny survives, no one is hurt at Colony House. I expected more. This isn’t necessarily a complaint, just an observation. I guess they’re saving the big deaths for the end of the season – but even one of the extras?
