One of the most anticipated releases of 2026 is upon us. Subnautica 2, the sequel to the 2018 survival action-adventure hit, launches Thursday for PC and Xbox Series X/S via early access. Here is all the information about one of the most interesting titles of the year.

When does Subnautica 2 Early Access unlock?
Subnautica 2 unlocks worldwide on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 8AM. PDT, with the same simultaneous unlocking in each region. Here is the breakdown for multiple time zones.
- 11 AM EDT in the US
- 4 p.m. BST in the UK
- 5 p.m. CEST in Western Europe
- Midnight JST on May 15 in Japan
The simultaneous global unlock is a nice change of pace from staggered local releases. It’s also far less complicated than what we’ve seen with other Early Access titles — especially on PC.
If you’ve already preloaded on Steam or Xbox, the game should be playable by the time the clock hits 15:00 UTC.
What platforms will Subnautica 2 be released on?
Early Access is out on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, plus Xbox Series X|S via Game Previewwith first joining Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Unknown Worlds and Xbox Wire has also confirmed support for ROG Xbox Ally portable and Xbox Play Anywhere, so a single purchase covers PC and Xbox.
PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions have not been announced. Unknown Worlds did not comment on these platforms, although the original Subnautica eventually made its way to both Sony and Nintendo platforms. Because of this, there’s hope that a later version won’t be off the table for more consoles, though it’s currently unconfirmed.
The same goes for VR support, which isn’t available at launch despite the original Subnautica’s strong VR following.
Can you preload Subnautica 2?
Yes. Pre-purchase and pre-loading are live on all three confirmed storefronts. THE The Steam preload is approximately 12.9GB with 14.56 GB of total disk space required and the Xbox Series X|S preload is around 14 GB. Epic Games Store buyers also have access to the 72-hour preload window.
Players who pre-purchase or wish-listed before launch receive a Reaper Leviathan statue base decoration as a thank you for reaching 5 million Steam wish-lists before the drop.
That’s a significant milestone for a survival game, and especially impressive for a title that has somewhat flown under the radar. I resisted an underwater joke.
It is also a note that shows that it has endured a complex path to the launch.
What should players expect from Subnautica 2 Early Access?
This is early access, not 1.0. Unknown Worlds has made it clear that more biomes, creatures, craftables, features and narrative content will be arriving in updates, with the studio touting it as a more refined and feature-rich early access release than any of their previous games.
It’s great to see a game being prepared for future development. Expect bugs, missing features, and ongoing patches as the studio iterates on community feedback.
The biggest design change from the original is the optional online co-op for up to four players in total, which Unknown Worlds called the most requested feature for the sequel. Combined with the Game Pass day-one drop and similarly structured early releases like Invincible Vs. At launch, Subnautica 2 has built in and most early access titles have to wait years to win.
