During a recent conversation with a leader, she acknowledged that in a central part of her career, she scolds for the proposal of an unspeakable idea during a high -stage meeting. “I wanted to promote the team to think differently,” he said. “But instead, I criticized for not staying in the established process. Because we are afraid of curiosity

Curiosity requires vulnerability. When you ask “why” or suggest a new approach, you inherently expose yourself to rejection or ridicule. It is easier and often safer to stay on the line, especially in cultures where success is determined by how well you perform proven ideas and not how courageous you explore the unknown territory.

Many workplaces unintentionally reproduce this fear. Performance measurements often give priority to predictability and effectiveness over experimentation. Leaders can ask for “innovation” and encourage us to “think differently” but when the initiatives do not give immediate returns, they are fast Label attempts as failures. Over time, the fear of curiosity enters the culture, silent, those who could call for unsuspecting questions or challenge outdated standards.

And it’s not just in the workplace. From an early age, many of us were socialized to “play safe”. Those who spoke very much in the classrooms were described as annoying. To shift this culture, we need leaders at every level to respect curiosity and see failure through a new lens. This means the evaluation of the exploration process as well as the result. It requires the creation of an environment where people feel safe to ask, “What if?” and are supported even when “what’s going on?” It does not achieve as planned.

One of the most important examples of this kind of leadership in my life came from my coach in high school and mentor Barbarian. Coach Bones, as he called him with love, had this excellent ability to see greatness to others, even when they didn’t see it on their own. “You’re capable of greatness,” he once told me, at a time when I questioned my gifts and my place in the team. His faith in my potential reforming how I saw myself and this trust stayed with me, not only affecting how I played in the race, but how I approached the challenges in life.

This type of guidance creates psychological security that do not have so many organizations and groups today. Knowing that someone believes in you sends a strong message that failure is not final, that boldness is worth the risk. Coach Bones didn’t just push his players to improve their skills. It inspired us to rest in our uniqueness, to see our “edge” as a force that could bring the best to ourselves and others. It is this kind of leadership that encourages innovation and durability, the same properties that the business world must cultivate. Here are 5 steps that can start to start inspiring bold innovations:

  1. Reform the failure as invaluable bold attempt
    Like bones coach helped me others, failure does not reflect our value. Leaders must redefine “failure” as an invaluable bold effort that embraces risk taking and learning. The teams should inform what went wrong without blaming and reflecting on the lessons acquired for the future.
  2. Reward of employees for their questions
    Encourage employees to ask provocative questions or suggest unusual ideas, even if these ideas do not have. The respect and liberation of their conduct, making it clear that their contributions are as important as traditional successes.
  3. Share the failures to model the durability
    Leaders who openly share their own failures are a powerful example. When people see the vulnerability shaped by decision -making managers, they feel more comfortable sharing their own challenges and ideas.
  4. Create space for exploration
    Leaders can create time and opportunities specifically for experimentation and free thinking. Make it clear that the effort and failure are as high as playing as playing to win.
  5. Determine success with curiosity and effort
    Move the definition of success from pure results focused on behavior. Did your team ask hard questions? Did they try something new? These actions must be recognized as success.

Examples of curiosity at work

A powerful example is in the first days of Airbnb. The founders of the company threw their bold idea of ​​renting air layers to strangers, receiving rejection after being rejected by investors. Their perseverance and curiosity about new hosting models eventually broke the travel industry.

Another one is Tesla’s relentless Focus on bold, innovative solutions. Although often criticized and not without frequent failures, the durability and experimentation of the company promoted significant developments in electric vehicles and renewable energy.
