This Saturday, April 8, a solar eclipse will be visible across North America. Through a 115-mile-wide path that stretches across Mexico, the US and Canada, a total solar eclipse will see the sun’s corona visible to the naked eye for a few minutes as a ‘supermoon’ covers the entire sun.

In the US, the “lucky” states crossed by the path of totality are Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Everywhere outside the path — including these states and across the rest of the country — will see a partial solar eclipse.

Here, I have collected 26 partial solar eclipse tracking events. For those in the western US, the partial eclipse will be light, while those in the northeastern states will see much more sun disappear behind the sun.

Location is everything

What you see from where you are will depend on your exact location, but this eclipse quest The engine will show you exactly when the eclipse will start and end, and how much of the sun will be blocked at the peak of the event.

Thinking of taking a trip to see a larger partial eclipse? Don’t waste your time. Either travel the path of totality or stay home. Traveling the path of wholeness to “raise the level of wholeness”—as I’ve heard people say—is wrong and misinformed. See the “Map of Nope”. If you are happy to see the moon cross part of the sun (and miss the grandeur of totality), it makes no difference to what extent the moon covers the sun. So the best advice is to just go to the event closest to you – no eclipse hunter travels to see a partial solar eclipse.

Avoid ‘Edge’ cities

I have specifically excluded all viewing events for a 99% partial solar eclipse in “extreme” cities such as Louisville, Kentucky, San Antonio, Texas, and Cincinnati, Ohio. These cities should make it very clear to their residents how close they are to the path of totality—and a truly mind-blowing experience—instead of promoting events that are, frankly, in the “wrong” place.

Get To The Path

If you’re over 95%, you really should get in a car/bus/train/Uber and get to the path of totality—however inconvenient or inconvenient you think it is. Totality is seriously that spectacular, and — with sympathy for those who simply can’t travel — seeing a partial solar eclipse when you’re so close to experiencing totality is a tragic loss to your life story.

Remember: there is no such thing as “99% totality”—there is totality on the path and no totality outside of it.

I wish you clear skies and open eyes.
