How did Gabriel Bonfim beat Belal Muhammad?
Bonfim’s size, speed and technical striking proved too much for Muhammad. The former champion didn’t push his wrestling like he did earlier in his career and opted to back up in an attempt to utilize his improved but still inferior striking.
This approach did not pay off for Muhammad as he was beaten and beaten soundly by the next real contender for the welterweight title.
All three judges gave identical 50-45 cards, a clean sweep that captured just how one-sided the night was. Bonfim’s calf kicks were a recurring weapon, repeatedly forcing Muhammad to switch stances while his pressure prevented the former champion from landing his title run-defining bout.
It’s Muhammad’s third straight loss, following a title loss to Jack Della Maddalena and a decision loss to Ian Machado Garry, and pushes Bonfim into the big picture as a welterweight contender.
