February is over and March has begun, the third month of 2026 and the beginning of spring (though not officially until the 20th and the vernal equinox). If you’re looking for something to do after solving today’s Wordle, check out our weekend streaming guide for all the best new TV shows and movies to watch this weekend.

Okay, let’s solve the first Wordle of the month!

How to solve today’s Wordle

How to play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or less. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct place.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong place.
  • Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.

Use these clues to limit your guesswork. Every day brings a new word and everyone around the world tries to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot, or even me, your humble storyteller. See the rules for Competitive Wordle towards the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Tips and Answers

  • Wordle Bot’s original word: SHALE
  • My opening word today: MARCH (754 words left)
  • The hint: A lucky break.
  • The Clue: This Wordle ends with a vowel.

Well, spoilers below! The answer is coming!

Bot Wordle Analysis

Every day I check the Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.

I chose MARCH for obvious reasons (and, in fact, my first Wordle-in-one was when I guessed MARCH on April 1st one year) but it was very unlucky today. 754 words remained, although OLIVE reduced it to just five. I debated between FLUKE and FLUTE, but I thought it would be a lot funnier if FLUKE ended up being right, so I went with that. . . and luckily for me, that was Wordle! What madness!

Competitive Wordle Score

Wordle Bot

Once again, the Bot and I get 1 point for guessing three and 0 for a tie. March totals start with a tie:

Eric: 1 point

Wordle Bot: 1 point

How to play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing at 1 is worth 3 points. Guessing in 2 is worth 2 points. Guessing in 3 is worth 1 point. Guessing on 4 is worth 0 points. Guessing in 5 is -1 points. Guessing 6 is -2 marks and missing the Wordle is -3 marks.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score every day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points — positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle etymology

Fluke It originally meant “flatfish” (the mush fish), from Middle English flukepossibly from Old Norse Floke or related Nordic forms. The meaning “chance, improbable luck” (18th–19th century) probably arose from nautical slang, perhaps referring to the fortuitous catching of the anchor.
