Every year, Apple announces which iPhones will run the next generation of iOS software. This software will be announced in June, will reach public beta in July, and will be generally released in September. Now, a new post claims to tell us which iPhones are about to drop off the compatibility list.
Of course, this does not mean that these iPhones will stop working. They will continue exactly as they do now, but new features exclusive to the next-gen software will not be available.
A new report spotted by MacRumors claims to list which iPhones have made the cut for the 2024 software. This has now been deleted, “likely because the account prefers to keep a low profile and many of its previously deleted posts contained accurate information. “
It then lists the iPhones that, if the report turns out to be accurate, will be able to run iOS 18. And it’s surprisingly good news.
Rumor has it that all phones from the iPhone XR onwards are compatible, which must mean both phones that landed a few weeks before the XR, namely the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max, as they contain the same processor, the A12 Bionic chip.
If you’re feeling a sense of déjà vu, that’s because it’s the exact same list as those running the latest iOS 17 software. In other words, if your iPhone can run iOS 17, it looks like it will run iOS 18, too. .
Apple has done this in the past, where the list of compatible iPhones is carried over completely for another year. But what’s surprising is that current rumors suggest that iOS 18 is a very big update, perhaps the biggest ever. So, you might have expected a lot of iPhones to fall off the list.
That said, it’s likely that, as is usually the case, the range of new features won’t be quite the same across the board. It is believed that there will be AI features in iOS 18, which could be very demanding on the processor. Perhaps the iPhone 16 will be able to handle certain tasks on the device that previous iPhones would need access to the cloud to accomplish.
For the sake of completeness, this is the full list of compatible iPhones, if the report is accurate. Apple iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone XR, iPhone SE 2n.d generation, iPhone SE 3rd generation.
Oh, and the new fall iPhones, of course. We’re still several months away from official confirmation, but if it’s correct, it’s impressive that any phone compatible with iOS 17 will also work with the next software.
