After more than a week at the top of Netflix’s Top 10 list, and likely securing a second season as a result, The Madness has now been dethroned by a new series that is attracting excellent critical ratings. Black Pigeons.
The new series is a six-episode spy show starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw about a spy whose cover is about to be blown. Not ideal, considering she’s been planted for the last ten years to marry the guy who’s now the defense secretary in the UK, and she has no idea. The series has an amazing 98% from critics, making it one of Netflix’s best new offerings in a long time, as The Madness didn’t come close to such scores. It seems likely to stay on top for a while as a result, and we’ll see if it gets renewed as a result, as it doesn’t appear to be a miniseries.
This is not the case with The Madness, which it was aired as a miniseries, but it doesn’t necessarily play out that way, and star Colman Domingo has expressed interest in returning to the role of Muncie Daniels to continue his story. With this kind of viewership, it seems likely that Netflix will ditch the limited series label and move on.
The rest of the list is interesting. Netflix’s reality series The Ultimatum, Love them or ditch them returns for Season 3. #4 is Sabrina Carpenter’s Christmas Nonsense Show, a 50-minute Hottest Artist of 2024 special with guests like Shania Twain and the other Hottest Artist of 2024, Chappell Roan. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this move up the list, but in terms of viewership, again, it’s only a 50 minute show as opposed to a 6-8 episode series that would have a lot more watch time.
Four of the six remaining shows on the list are reality series, Cold Case: JonBenet Ramsey, Fortune Feimster’s comedy special, Is It Cake? and Churchill at war. The other two are Later Daters and former #1 Man on the Inside, who is still waiting for the Season 2 renewal he seems likely to get.
I’m curious to see if Black Doves stays at #1 for a while, as early public reception isn’t as high as critics, but getting to #1 on day two of release is a pretty good start, and it really won’t you could ask about anything above.
