Baron Corbin returned to WWE on Friday when he made his presence felt during the United States Championship match. Let’s talk WWE.
What happened when Baron Corbin returned to SmackDown?
Corbyn’s return had been rumored, but the placement surprised many.
WWE closed the moment in ending the non-title match between the US Champion Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayesa Hayes fight could have turned into a future title shot with a win. As Hayes climbed the ropes for a finisher, Baron Corbin appeared on the apron, tossed him for disqualification, then dropped both men with the End of Days.
The closing image did the talking. Corbin took the United States Championship and stood over both Superstars, a booking option called his goal without a word of promotion.
Why did WWE bring back Baron Corbin now?
Baron is a reliable villain who can give Trick and Melo someone to fight, which delays their inevitable showdown. WWE probably thinks the Melo-Trick could be a box office hit, but it might be too early for that to happen.
The timing fits a SmackDown roster with established heels close to the US title. Corbin’s comeback was reported for weeksand WWE completed the deal following his stint in MLW as Bishop Dyer, where he held the tag titles before leaving.
Dropping him on a hot schedule gives creative a real hurdle for both men, echoing how WWE has positioned other SmackDown freshmen as immediate troublemakers.
What does Corbin’s return mean for the US title picture?
With Sami Zayn elevated to the WWE title scene and never quite fitting into the heel role, there was a need for an undeniable heel. Corbin checks all the boxes.
The stage was already crowded. Williams keeps the belt, Hayes goes after it and Ricky Saints he appeared backstage to watch, keeping his own claim alive.
Corbin’s arrival gives this team a heel anchor instead of a field of babyfaces jockeying for the same spot, which sharpens the direction heading into the summer.
What’s next for Baron Corbin in WWE?
A triple threat match between the three men could be on the way to SummerSlam. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see them participate in something at Saturday Night’s Main Event in New York on July 18th.
A multi-man match is the cleanest way to fold Corbin without unraveling the SummerSlam image too early and keeps Williams-Hayes on a slow burn.
The closest indicator is Saturday Night’s Main Event in New York, a logical stage to push the storyline. WWE also filed one trademark for “The Nomad”, a hint that the returning veteran might not be “Baron Corbin” for long.
