Note: Be sure to complete today’s NYT links before reading further! We will get into spoilers for today’s game very quickly. If you need some help completing the grid, you can find mine NYT links hint and answer column for today via my author page.
Hello, Connectors! Welcome to my deepest dive into today Connections answers. The idea behind this is to help clear things up for anyone who isn’t sure how the current teams match up.
If I missed any red herrings or misunderstood something, please let me know via email or Discord. I don’t usually look at X or check the comments here.
I’m going to assume you’ve already won today’s game. let’s go straight into the spoiler area here. Well, consider this your only warning.
Here are today’s NYT links explained answers (and any red herrings I spotted) for Friday July 10:
Today’s NYT Connections Answers Explained
Connections – Yellow Team
🟨 Smartphone settings (AIRPLANE MODE, DO NOT DISTURB, HOTSPOT, LOCATION SERVICES)
AIRPLANE MODE disables a phone’s cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, ostensibly to protect airplane systems and instruments from interference.
DO NOT DISTURB can mute notifications and calls, although you can create exceptions.
If you enable your phone’s HOTSPOT, other devices can connect to it to access the internet via Wi-Fi.
If you have LOCATION SERVICES turned on, apps (with your permission) can see where you are. This is useful for things like getting directions to a destination. For what it’s worth, the vast majority of apps and websites don’t need to know your location.
Connections – Green Team
Dessert Menu Descriptors (DECADENT, FRESH-BAKED, MOLTEN, À LA MODE)
DECADENT means “indulgent” in this context. FRESH-BAKED goes without saying.
In the US, if a dessert is À LA MODE, it means it is served with a scoop of ice cream. There is very little I love more than good ice cream with a LOLTEN chocolate cake with a warm liquid chocolate in the middle. Heaven.
Connections – Blue Group
🦶Synth-pop bands of the 80s (DEPECHE MODE, ERASURE, NEW ORDER, PET SHOP BOYS)
The category title handles things for us here, but of course I’ll offer one song from each band:
God, I love Neil Tennant’s voice.
Connections – Purple Team
🟪 Starting with baseball calls (BALL DRESS, OUTKAST, SAFE MODE, STRIKE A POSE)
These refer to:
- BALL > Ball
- OUTKAST > Out
- SAFE MODE > Safe
- HIT DRINK > Strike
I’m still pretty new to baseball. I enjoy it a lot, but I don’t think I’m at the level where I can succinctly and clearly explain what it all means. Luckily, there’s always a YouTube video:
For a recent example of how not to play baseball, here it is (I’ve been laughing at this all week):
Connections – Red Herrings
Connections often have a few red herrings. Let’s take a look at today’s (assuming I spotted one).

At least two of the teams had an additional candidate. OUTKAST is a (brilliant) hip-hop group that could match the blues somehow. SAFE MODE is also a phone setting.
There were also several fashion related terms such as BALL GOWN, STRIKE A POSE and À LA MODE.
If you want to talk about his game today Connections And pretty much anything else with me and a really nice group of people, you can do just that inside our Discord community. We’d love for you to hang out with us.
I will be back with another set NYT links hints and answers on Monday, and another edition of this column, all going well. You will be able to find both in mine Forbes author page when the time comes (following me there helps me too!). As for my weekend editions NYT links tip and answer column, I currently do this through my newsletter, Hobby.
