- A new Google Photos feature is in tests that allows users to automatically back up their “favorite” photos.
- This feature could help you declutter your library and dramatically reduce your Cloud storage use.
- The update offers a medium ground between the backup for everything or nothing, giving users more control over their photo library.
Google is testing a small but very necessary change in Google photos that could not only help your library on Google Photos, but also help you save money on subscription fees.
As identified by the researcher ASSEMBLEDEBUGE for Android principleGoogle Photos is working on a new option that allows you to automatically back up your favorite photos, keeping the rest of the pictures on your local device but outside the cloud. With this option you selected, all your favorite images will be safely stored on Google servers and everything else will only remain on your local device until you choose to delete it.
Unfortunately, no choice works well in all scenarios. Following is a summary of current backup options and the expected advantages of Google’s new choice.
Enable backup
If you turn on the backup, each photo or video shooting will be back up to Google Photos servers, keeping them safe but consuming valuable storage.
Google provides a “Undo Device Backup” feature to remove all the photos and videos from the cloud while keeping them on your local device, but there is no easy way to do this for individual images. This can lead to a lot of clutter in your library.

Leave the backup
If you leave the backup, Google Photos displays a ‘cloud’ icon at the top of the screen that you can press when viewing an individual image to support it.
However, if you do this, Google will occasionally make you activate the backup when you open the application. It also forces you to see each image in turn to support it.
New! Backup only favorites
According to the code found in the latest Google Photos app, a new option is under test that will allow you to “automatically back up your loved ones alone” and “keep your favorite safe with automatically supporting photos when you love them.”
The details are rare at the moment and there are a few questions: Users will still be able to back up individual (non -favorite) photos? Will it allow the ability to back up all the previously favored images, or will it only support them “when you love them” as defined above?
It is also not clear what happens when you do not love a photo that has already been supported. Will the backup be removed? Will the original remain on your local device?
Google must clarify these points, such as Google Photos Community support pages Show that confused users are still losing permanent photos when trying to clean the cloud storage.
