While it wasn’t going to top Cobra Kai Season 6 and only hit #1 for a few days, Netflix’s latest docu-series scored a perfect 100% from critics, something you don’t usually see from this genre. This show is Simone Biles Risingwhich follows the all-time great gymnast through her successes and failures.
The show currently has a perfect 100% rating from (admittedly a few) critics Rotten tomatoes, which is the only 100% on Netflix’s top 10 series list right now, and we don’t see it very often. I’m having trouble remembering Any documentary or reality show that lands. It may change as more reviews come in, but in general these shows tend to be reviewed less often than Netflix’s big dramas. Cobra Kai Season 6 already has double the reviews (even though it’s only the first part of a three-part final season).
However, Simon Biles Rising is… barely a show. While these documentaries are generally shorter than most, this is essentially a film split in half with just two episodes clocking in at 55 minutes and 49 minutes respectively. I’m not sure if Netflix requires it, as you almost never see their original documentaries make it into the movie category, no matter how soon. But since the Top 10 list is made by airtime, it remains all the more impressive that it is so high on the list.
The documentary does not cover Biles’ entire career, but rather follows her poor performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she withdrew due to mental health concerns. She then talks about how she’s rebuilding herself for a “triumphant” return to the sport. A recent record she set was landing a Yurchenko double pike vault at the international World Gymnastics Championships, which has never been done before. After that, she changed her name to “Biles II”. Here’s what it looked like:
Biles returns of course for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where she will compete for Team USA and try to make her comeback complete. The Olympic Games begin on July 26 and run until August 11. The fitness section in particular will last from Saturday 27th July to Thursday 1st August, so in the first half of the competition. Clearly the documentary is great to watch before watching her fight again. Let’s hope she can live up to her extremely high potential this time. I can’t wait to see how it goes.
