According to their statement, in the last six weeks, the Iranian authorities have intimidated and threatened 45 journalists and 315 members of their family. The Iranian authorities are said to be threatened to kill these journalists and their relatives unless they stop working for Iran international with specific deadlines, which have now passed. Iran International is a news platform dedicated to covering Iran -related events and developments, as well as regional and global stories that affect the Iranians at home and abroad. Based in London, with offices in Washington, DC and around the world, it broadcasts internationally, providing a vital source of news and information to people living in and outside Iran.
The Iranian authorities have a long -term targeting model of international Iranian journalists and their families. Since its formation in 2017, Iranian international journalists have targeted the Iranian authorities in retaliation for reports, with threats of murder and abduction, serious physical attacks, electronic abuse, harassment and piracy, among others. In March 2025, two men, believed to be acting for Iran, were condemned to a plan of murder-for-lease aimed at an Iranian-American journalist Masih Aleinejad (in July 2022).
The Iranian authorities are known to commit transnational repression worldwide. In recent report Published by the Mixed Human Rights Committee, a committee consisting of members of both houses of the United Kingdom Parliament (Parliament of the Lords of the Lords), the British parliamentarians raised that “tactics used by Iran, including murder diagrams judicial procedures.
Responding to threats against 45 journalists and 315 members of their family, the legal team for Iran international has appealed with five United Nations experts, the United Nations Special Rapporteur (MS Irene Khan). Mai Sato). Emergency appeal calls on the UN to take action against Iran for serious risks to the lives and security of their journalists in seven countries worldwide, namely the United Kingdom, the US, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Turkey and Belgium and their members.
As the legal team argues, despite threats that are not new, in the last six weeks, from mid -June 2025, they have seen “an alarming and unprecedented escalation” of the situation, with an ever -growing and real danger to the lives of journalists and members of their family. As their statement said, “without any excuse, the Iranian authorities immediately began – on a systematic and widely used basis – to accuse Iran’s international journalists of being sponsored by Israel, responsible for providing information on Iranian infrastructure.” Such as We have underlined“Expressions and credible threats have been made to kill both journalists and family members.”
While the emergency appeal focuses on 45 journalists and 315 of their family members, the legal team has made it clear that the number of targeted journalists continues to grow with a rapid and alarming rate: “We expect more within a few hours of submission of this emergency”.
UN experts have not yet confirmed if and what steps they will request. However, as the situation is of exceptional urgency, other roads must be considered to ensure the safety and well -being of all risks. Some of these steps were recently proposed by the Mixed Human Rights Committee as a means of addressing the issue of transnational repression. States around the world must determine the best way to protect people in their jurisdiction and respond to transnational repression must be part of their national security strategy.
