Google’s next Pixel smartphones are set to launch next month, and new details suggest a much-needed upgrade is on the way.

The team at Android Authority, citing sources with knowledge of the matterare reporting that the three Pixel 9 devices (Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL) will all feature an ultrasonic fingerprint reader.

This will improve the responsiveness and accuracy of the biometric sensor in the upcoming handsets. The fingerprint readers on the latest Pixel devices have was not well receivedwith Google’s support pages littered with complaints about the sensors, they wonder why they might be unresponsive and inaccurate.

Current (and older) Pixels use an optical sensor, which can be weak just as many users have discovered, and are by nature limited to scanning in 2D. The move to an ultrasonic sensor should allow for greater fidelity when reading the fingerprint, more security in unlocking the device, and greater accuracy when dealing with a wet screen or finger.

The new sensor isn’t the only upgrade Google is expected to make to the core hardware of the Pixel 9 series. An improved display has been spotted in the supply chain. Google could be preparing to use dual-stack technology, which will give the Pixel 9 a brighter display with longer life and reduced power consumption.

Update: Sunday, July 7: After the latest screen details, two new ones video on the internet have introduced a new variant of the Pixel 9 in a deep pink color. Videos from brokers in Algeria show the vanilla Pixel 9 model.

The redesigned camera line is clear. Rather than running the length of the smartphone’s rear case—like the Pixel 6, 7, and 8 models—the camera line stops very close to the edges with wide, rounded corners, matching renders leaked from earlier this year.

This camera line echoes a design cue from last year’s Pixel Fold. You can also see the dual lenses on the dash, along with an LED flash. The larger Pixel 9 Pro is expected to launch with three lenses, adding a x5 telephoto lens with periscope zoom.

Google is holding a launch event on August 9, where the three Pixel 9 handsets will be released, along with the next generation of Google AI.
