Forty years ago Falloutdared Kyle McLachlan Dune as Paul Atreides. Now, at a fateful time, Dune successfully reappeared in a sequel Dune: Part Two just like McLachlan is starting a new franchise.

In Fallout, McLachlan stars as Vault 33 supervisor Hank MacLean, a central character in the new Prime Video series. Adapted from the blockbuster video game series of the same name by Todd Howard’s Bethesda Softworks, Fallout tells how Hank’s daughter Lucy (Ella Purnell) emerges from her vault in the nuclear wasteland above on a personal mission connected to her father.

It’s on the scorched surface where Lucy learns firsthand about the remnants of the Great War, when the US was decimated in a nuclear apocalypse 219 years ago.

In a recent Zoom interview for discussion FalloutMcLachlan reflected on the fact that four decades later he starred as Atreides in director David Lynch’s version of author Frank Herbert Dunehis career is booming more than ever.

“I must be doing something right – the sandworms haven’t figured me out yet,” McLachlan told me with a laugh. “I haven’t seen the second one yet, but I have seen the first one and I really enjoyed it. I think it’s because I love the book Frank wrote and his world so much Dune it was a big part of my growing up.”

Call it fate, but less than a decade later McLachlan has surpassed what he imagined reading its pages Dune to play the leading role on the big screen of the big story.

I read the book when I was 15… and it really spoke to me,” McLachlan recalls. “I carried it with me all the way, low and behold, eight years after I first read it, I’m auditioning and doing screen tests and finally getting the part of Paul. It was impressive to me coming out of Seattle with no film experience at all.”

McLachlan was impressed with Paul Atreides’ version of Chalamet

Kyle McLachlan told his love for Dune continues to this day and was thrilled to see Timothée Chalamet take on the classic role of Paul Atreides in his new big screen iteration Dunewhich started in 2021.

“I love it so much — it was really fun to see Timothée take on the role,” enthused McLachlan. “I loved seeing the characters they came up with and I loved seeing how some of the scenes, word for word, were very similar to our version.”

Of course, 1984 Dune marked McLachlan’s first collaboration with director David Lynch, with whom he worked again on classic films such as 1986 Blue velvet and of 1992 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Meas well as the original Twin Peaks series from 1989-1991 and the Twin Peaks reboot in 2017.

McLachlan said that one of the most interesting aspects of watching director Denis Villeneuve’s new version Dune looked at the different ways in which Lynch and Villeneuve interpreted the narrative of Frank Herbert’s original novel.

“Obviously it was different eras in which the films were made and different filmmakers,” McLachlan observed. “David is an artist, so he will bring his artistic sensibility to the film and what you will have is an amalgamation of Frank and David Lynch. I think Dennis did more of an interpretation of Frank’s book, so they’re different in their approaches.”

Therefore, McLachlan added, he left watching it Dune The remake believing that both it and the 1984 film should be celebrated equally and not treated as competitors. As such he is looking forward to it Dune: Part Two.

“I saw Dune and [thought], “These worlds can coexist,” McLachlan said. “Both films can exist and both are enjoyable for their own reasons. I came away feeling really good about it and I’m excited to see the second installment.”

It may take a while for McLachlan to get to the theater to watch Dune: Part Two since he is currently busy promoting Fallout.

In addition to McLachlan and Ella Purnell, Fallout It also stars Walton Goggins as The Ghoul, a nuclear-radiated cowboy who has walked Earth’s decimated landscape for more than 200 years to carry out a personal vendetta. Aaron Moten also plays a key role Fallout as Maximus, a Brotherhood of Steel gunslinger who sometimes wears the militaristic organization’s Power Armor.

All eight episodes of it Fallout are broadcast on Prime Video.
