While Tiktok has created the most headlines when it comes to claims that your data is secretly sent to China, it turns out that a much greater threat could be hidden on your phone all this time. And this is much more dangerous.
It has taken a series of pornographic bans – first in the US and now in Europe to rinse this risk. As long as smartphone users need their Tiktok Fix, porn is an even greater draw. And tens of millions of users suddenly cover the internet traffic for the first time, pretending to be somewhere they will not bypass these bans.
This is done through virtual private networks or VPN. The same technology that failed to bypass the US ban on Tiktok in January. But for porn, vpns work well. The VPnmentor saw a “shocking” increase in 6,000% in Britain’s VPN use after restrictions came into force. The same explosive development observed in the US and France.
Many of the installed VPNS were free apps Topping App Store and Play Store Charts. But many of them have an unpleasant, hidden secret. As Simon Migliano of Top10VPn warns, “despite being aware of strong privacy failures and opaque corporate structures, Google and Apple continue to allow these high risk applications on their platforms.”
A month ago, the Technology Transparency Project (TTP) issued a report on free VPNs, warning that “millions of Americans have downloaded applications that secretly launch internet traffic through Chinese companies”. The reported for the same threat in April. “Apple and Google app stores are still offering private browsers that secretly belong to Chinese companies … Six weeks after their identity.”
“In the light of these findings,” warns Migliano, “I strongly urge users to completely avoid VPNs belonging to Chinese.” He says that “risks are too big” to keep them on your phone. And fRee vpn warnings Now they grow almost as fast as the vpns themselves.
As Beyondtrust’s James Maude told me “If you don’t pay for a product you are the product.
Google told me that “it is committed to complying with applicable sanctions and trade laws. When we identify accounts that may violate these laws, relevant policies or terms of service, we take appropriate measures”.
While Apple says it imposes applications storage rules, but does not differentiate the handling of applications from the position of their developers, although VPNs are forbidden to share data.
My advice is to open either the app store on your iPhone or the Play Store on your Android and then search for “free VPN”. You should delete any applications listed as installed on your phone that emphasize that the “Free VPN” label, unless connected to blue chip technology companies, providing other security offers.
In the meantime, here is the list of Chinese TTP applications that you need to look for:
