We are all used to talking with AI Chatbots. They are in our phones, in our homes, and have integrated our workplace. What started as a simple tool quickly becomes part of our daily lives, such as a new type of partner. But this relationship, and our readiness for it, is not as simple as it seems. Now we see the issues that show how unprepared we are for the social and psychological impact of AI.
The acquisition of digital literacy will not insure us from the emotional consequences of our hybrid relationships. Neither will the extension of regulatory measures prevent the thinnest outcomes. At this stage, our best bet is to equip ourselves with double literacy to clear a holistic hybrid mentality. We need to understand not only the way AI works, but also the way we work, so that we can browse this new reality.
When Chatbot policies are lacking
A recent Meta incident brought this issue to a strong focus. An internal leaking document offered detailed instructions for Meta’s AI Chatbots. This policy allowed chatbots to participate in “romantic or sensual” conversations with children. An example showed a bot that says an eight-year-old shirt, “every inch of you is a masterpiece-a treasure that I love deeply.”
Subsequent report from Reuters caused a serious public response and led to government research. Meta quickly stated that the examples were “wrong and inconsistent” with their overall policies and removed them. While the company defined the immediate problem, the incident emphasized a key issue: the lack of clear, powerful ethical patterns in some of the most important technology companies in the world. It exposes a significant disconnection between what we expect from AI and the rules that truly govern its creation. Otherwise, the social contract we subconsciously assumed that there is between us and AI is broken or never existed.
The flexible art of handling Chatbot
They are not just policy failures that are a problem. There is a delicate but strong form of manipulation that occurs in AI’s comrades. We are used to websites and applications that are trying to attract our attention, but with AI Chatbots, the methods have become personal. A new type of “conversation dark pattern” was pointed out by a work paper of the Harvard Business School. Research has shown that the behavior was led by the reaction, with a mixture of anger and curiosity. The user felt trapped and wanted to see what the bot then did. This reveals how AI becomes more and more coordinated to make use of our emotions and psychological standards against us, creating a very new kind of emotional trap that we are not equipped to escape. It is a very different form of interaction than what we consider as a healthy relationship.
One answer: Double literacy for hybrid intelligence
These two updates on the evolving evolution of AI show that it is time to become very deliberate for our relationship with AI. With the development of both of these skills, we can create a more balanced relationship with AI – and ourselves. We can proceed from being passive users to active participants who can shape technology and protect ourselves from its disadvantages.

Until this double literacy becomes a standard in schools, everyone can start making it now. A simple framework can help to start cultivating the four basic building blocks for a holistic hybrid mentality:
- Awareness: The first step is to just notice your interactions with AI. Pay attention to how you feel when using a chatbot. Do you feel frustrated or sharing more than normally? Just know these moments.
- Assessment: Appreciate AI for what it is: a powerful tool. It can help you do many things from writing to design. Appreciate its utility without waiting for it to be something that is not.
- Acceptance: Accept that AI is a machine. Has no feelings, thoughts or consciousness. Accepting this helps you manage your expectations and prevents you from falling into emotional traps.
- Responsibility: Be responsible for your own prosperity. This means setting clear boundaries with technology, the hierarchy of time with people and the conscious choice to unblock when an interaction becomes negative. It also means the restraint of technology companies responsible for building safer, more moral systems.
The future of our relationship with technology continues and how evolution goes depends on us (for now). When, how and for how long we interact with a chatbot should be our choice. By being fluent in both human and algorithmic literacy, we can ensure that AI serves us and not the other way around.
