How to play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or less. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct place.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong place.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to limit your guesswork. Every day brings a new word and everyone around the world tries to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot, or even me, your humble storyteller. See the rules for Competitive Wordle towards the end of this post.

Bot Wordle Analysis
Every day I check the Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.
STONE was a pretty lucky guess, leaving me with only 32 words and three yellow boxes. I tried juggling the LEMON and that made them almost perfect. With only one word left, I guessed WOMEN and that, my dear Wordlers, was Wordle! Huzzah! Three cheers for the WOMEN!
Competitive Wordle Score

Another draw of course. The Bot and I get 1 point for guessing three and 0 for a tie. Our new April totals are:
Eric: 17 points
Wordle Bot: 14 points
How to play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing at 1 is worth 3 points. Guessing in 2 is worth 2 points. Guessing in 3 is worth 1 point. Guessing on 4 is worth 0 points. Guessing in 5 is -1 points. Guessing 6 is -2 marks and missing the Wordle is -3 marks.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score every day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points — positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle etymology
“Women” is the plural of “woman”.
“Woman” comes from Old English wīfmann—literally “woman-face” (wīf = “woman, female”; mann = “person, man”). Over time, wīfmann it was done wimmanthen woman.
The plural women eventually shifted in pronunciation and spelling to “women”. The change in vowel sound (as in wim-) reflects older plural patterns in English that survived even when spelling was standardized.
