The DX Chogokin SDF-1 Macross will be released in Japan this coming November.
BigWest, Bandai Spirits
THE SDF-1 from the 1982 original Long The TV series takes a huge new transforming die cast toy later this year, but only in Japan.
The SDF-1, or Super Dimension Fortress 1, is a massive transforming battleship known as the Long in the series of the same name.
Designed by Kazutaka Miyatake, the idea to contain a city came from Shoji Kawamori’s work on Ulysses 31. It’s also iconic to the original TV series, and this is where the theme begins.
While most of the rights for Long eventually returned to BigWest in 2021, the original TV series and film, Do you remember love?are still in somewhat of a limbo, with Harmony Gold still dealing with those two specific properties.
This is because in the mid-1980s, Long, Southern Crossand MOSPEADA hacked together to create Robotechwhich is owned by Harmony Gold.
This means that this SDF-1 toy is from the original Longit will not be released in the US. Although I doubt that will stop fans from importing this game from various places on the internet.
Aside from the limited edition, this game is priced at a suitably hefty 99,000 yen (or about $623 at the current exchange rate).
You get a lot for that price though, with all sorts of lighting gimmicks, accessories and a lot of weight at around 65cm in size due to the fact that it’s 1/2000 scale.
The other cool news is that both T-Rex and Kazutaka Miyatake have worked on this game, as the official Bandai Spirits website has nice new interview with both of them for that.
While I technically prefer it movie version of the SDF-1which already has an amazing Arcadia game, this is definitely the biggest and most impressive game of the telecast.
With any luck, I’ll be able to get one when it comes out in Japan this November, but I honestly have no idea where to put it.
